We are committed to working in an outcome informed way by using reliable measures to track our effectiveness. Research strongly points to the fact that the best person to measure change is our client. We like to work in a collaborative way to ensure our work together makes sense and that we are working in a manner that fits well for each individual. (Please see Outcome informed practice for more details)

In order to further the development of effectiveness in counselling and psychotherapy we participate in the work of the

Human Givens Institute Practice Research Network (www.hgiprn.org)

When clients first make contact we are frequently asked about how many appointments may be necessary. Below are some of the research findings from our HGI Practice Network collated results.

  • About 73% of our clients show a reliable clinical change by the end of therapy.
  • Our average client at the end of therapy is better off than about 90% of our clients at the start of therapy.
  • Our clients stay in therapy with us for an average of 4 sessions, with the most common number of sessions (36%) being 2.
  • 90% of our clients see the therapist for 6 visits or less.

Please remember the above information is based on our collected results. While it is true that for many clients the number of therapy sessions is indeed very low, there are some clients who require more extensive treatment. Everyone is an individual and we cannot make any sort of guarantees about the outcome for any particular client.

How does measuring effectiveness help you as a client?
Every individual is unique and has a personal view about change and improvement. We choose to let our clients be the best assessors of their own progress in therapy. The sensible use of simple measures (ORS) can contribute significantly to assessment of real change in the world outside of therapy. However, if any client prefers not to use a measure we always respect that choice. The measures are there to enhance progress and act as a guide. Most importantly, we want to know if our work together is NOT effective so we can discuss sensible options and alternatives.

Why do we measure our effectiveness?
Research strongly supports the fact that if we ask you for feedback (SRS) about how the therapy is from your perspective and we adjust to work with you in a way that best suits your needs your outcome from therapy will be better.
